Our Courses
The Intitute will endeavor to keep seeking out other specialist training courses and providers. Each training provider will train disadvantaged learners at no charge to the Institute.

Each training provider must have the required accreditation through SAMSA and the TETA to provide the necessary training. The Institute will also apply for its own accreditation for all courses to enable it to provide its own certification to disadvantaged learners although the training providers will provide the actual training on site.

According to the Standards of Training for Certified Watchkeepers (STCW) Regulations which is prescribed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), all learners must become self sufficient in all areas of emergencies at sea (Basic Safety Training – Entry Level) before employment can even be considered at sea. These compulsory courses include: (This will teach them to stay alive during an emergency at sea)
  • Marine fire fighting and fire prevention
  • Elementry Medical care onboard ship
  • Personal safety and social responsibility
  • Personal survival techniques
All new comers need to complete the above compulsory courses before being trained in their various disciplines. (It becomes our job to teach everyone to stay alive during an emergency at sea, and the Institute takes this very seriously in all aspects).

All financially disadvantaged learners will also receive the
following free of charge:
  • Seaman’s record book - Regulations
  • Seaman’s medical – Regulations (SAMSA)
  • Placement on the database of SACGI
  • Uniforms
  • Transport to and from home for learners outside the Cape Town or Durban
    Metropole
  • Accommodation at the Institute – where applicable
  • Disposable ablution items for their use during their stay
  • All necessary stationery
  • Quality meals
  • Clothing
The compulsory training period is 7 days, after which advanced courses can then be taken. The Institute’s aim is to provide training for at least thirty cadets per week. 50% of the learners will be from the disadvantaged sector and 50% will be paying learners – by doing it this way it reduces the overheads of training for disadvantaged learners and thereby we can train more of these learners.
